The HSB Color System

Brightness

Brightness is simply the dimension of a color that represents its similarity to a series of achromatic colors (colors that are fully desaturated and therefore having no hue) ranging from very dim to very bright.

In other words, brightness is a color's equivalent location along the grayscale. This is represented in the images below where you can see how all colors in the range of black to red equate to a point on the grayscale.
